Essay

Alexey Titarenko was born in St. Petersburg, a city in Russia, in 1963. He began his photography journey at just the age of 9 years old. In 1978, he received a degree in photojournalism from the Leningrad Public University of Society-related Professions. And later in 1983, he received the Master’s degree in Cinematic and Photographic Arts from the Leningrad Institute of Culture.

Titarenko was renowned for his darkroom skills, which includes bleaching and toning to add depth to images. He also excels in taking long exposure photos, partically the use of static environment to create a contrast with the static subject.

“City of Shadows”, one of the most well-known series of him, was taken after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. He wanted to capture the human condition of the Russian people, in particular the their suffering throughout the 20th century.
