  1. Definition of digital nomad

When you see the word digital nomad, you might be wondering what exactly does it mean. It’s actually not that straight-forward.

Even though the definition of digital nomad is quite ambivalent among scholars, from Arifa’s 2022 and Richter’s 2020 research we can discover some common ground between these definitions. Most agree upon that digital nomads are individuals who escaped from the conventional location-dependent working modality, and they utilize technologies to work digitally. By doing so, they enjoy a greater flexibility and freedom.

  2. Question

Being a digital nomad, you enjoy your time in various amazing locations, have a greater control over your time. As tempting as it might seem, being a digital nomad might not actually be all sunshine and rainbows.

Now keep this question in your mind: “Do you think digital nomad would the last working modality someone go through?”

  3. Five transitional stages

Now let’s dive deeper into why one may take on this endeavour to become a digital nomad.

In 2022, Arifa and her colleagues who are experts in business and psychology conducted a thorough research on the transitional stages of digital nomads. 5 of them were then put frothed, specifically, they are “resisting against established work norms”, “experimenting with work and life”, “evaluating work-life values”, “establishing new working modality”, and “rebelling against the nomadic lifestyle”.

28 digital nomads were recruited, and their responses were analyzed using the concept of working identity, which refers to how individuals define themselves in a working environment. Not only so, but they also used meticulous diagrams to classify digital nomads’ mental models into theoretical categories and dimensions.

  4. Limitations

You may be wondering, rebellion toward digital nomading? At first, I’m on the same boat with you, digital nomading should be a wonderful job natural right? But in Arifa
’s 2022 research, the unstable nature of digital nomading is raised as a concern by many of the participants. They have to juggle work and travel sinmutaneously, they have to manage their routines systematically, along side with tons of intertwined social connections. Without me saying, you can understand that digital nomading is quite arduous for lots of people.

If you still have doubt about why digital nomading might not be sustainable, let’s take a look at Andrea Valeria’s journey, who is not a research subject but another venturous individual. She is a seasoned digital nomad with 4 years of experience, surprisingly she also settled down and then become a renowned remote work specialist. Dividing her journey into the proposed transitional stages, we can quite clearly see

Comment

Great voiceover and in-depth knowledge on the topic, the musics are also on point. Although the video does relate to script, there might be too many of them? Plus there’s a subtitle error for “stakeholder”.

In a business setting, I believe it’s important for managers to embrace this kind of flexible working modality. With reference to Richter’s findings in 2020, digital nomads are individuals who value the goal of a task more than the time spent on a task. Perhaps businesses can shift their focal points towards achieving goals instead of time-based assessments. This allows employees to have their own working routine or plan as long as they can produce the outcome. This, in turn, put together a more flexible and employee-friendly environment. Richter also revealed that flexibility in the workplace could lead to higher productivity, therefore a win-win situation for both business and digital nomads can be achieved. Now let’s come closer to ourselves, practically for digital nomads. With regards to Arifa’s findings, we should be reminded that digital nomading might only be a transitional stage in our career. Concluded from Richter

For individuals, practically those who wanna become a digital nomad, they should be reminded that digital nomad might just a transition stage in their career life. Suggest by Richter’s findings, digital nomads might suffer from constantly switching jobs and working locations, causing the aforementioned chaotic lifestyle. As per Arifia’s research suggests, we should rather treat digital nomading as a transitional stage in our careers, but not really the final destination. At the meantime, take the change to explore the world, try out different professions, experiment with the nomadic way of living. Even if individuals find themselves burnout in the long run, nothing stops them from just settling down. You can even gain the priceless experience of digial nomading!
